Dan'Majen Gwandu's Contribution to Development of Kebbi State

ENGR. AHMED UMAR FAROUK (DAN MAJEN GWANDU, GAMJIN KABI): DRIVING BIG CHANGES AT SIR AHMADU BELLO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, BIRNIN KEBBI

Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport in Birnin Kebbi has seen major improvements in recent years—and one name stands out in making that happen: Engr. Ahmed Umar Farouk, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). A proud son of Kebbi State, Farouk is also known by his traditional titles Dan Majen Gwandu and Gamjin Kabi.

Thanks to his leadership, the airport has been upgraded with modern equipment and better infrastructure, making it one of the best regional airports in Nigeria today. His efforts have not only improved the airport itself but have also made air travel in and out of Kebbi safer and more efficient.

As the head of NAMA, the agency in charge of managing Nigeria’s airspace and air traffic services, Engr. Farouk made sure that Kebbi wasn’t left behind. Under his watch, the agency invested in important upgrades that are now making a big difference at the airport.

One of the key steps taken was the installation of solar-powered systems to run critical airport equipment like the Glide Slope, Localizer, and DVOR—tools that help pilots land safely and communicate with control towers. These systems now run 24/7 without interruption, even when there’s no public power supply.

New boreholes were dug to provide water, while generator houses and security shelters were built at equipment sites to keep everything running smoothly and safely. The airport also got upgraded navigation tools, including the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), which guide aircraft during landing and takeoff. These improvements help pilots fly in and out of the airport with greater accuracy and safety.

Because of all these changes, Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport is now seen as reliable and capable of handling important flights. In fact, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has chosen Kebbi as the starting point for the 2024 Hajj airlift—a major win for the state and the airport.

Engr. Farouk didn’t stop at just technical upgrades. He also looked after the welfare of NAMA staff. He approved the full renovation of the houses given to NAMA staff in Dakingari by the Kebbi State Government. Work has already started and is expected to finish soon.

The Kebbi State Government also played a helpful role by supporting NAMA’s work, which made it easier to carry out these improvements.

Today, thanks to Engr. Ahmed Umar Farouk’s dedication and vision, Birnin Kebbi’s airport has become a model for others to follow. His work is a clear example of what can be achieved when someone leads with passion, purpose, and love for their home.
