Kebbi Government Commends USAID Project

Kebbi Ministry of Health Gives USAID's MSSFPO Project Pass Mark With a DISTINCTION* 

The Kebbi State Ministry of Health represented by the Director Medical Services, Dr. Jibril Labbo Gwandu rated USAID'S sponsored project; MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics DISTINCTION, clear indication that the project was successful in Kebbi State.

Dr. Gwandu gave the mark in an interview with group of journalist at Sustainability and scale up event meeting organized by USAID MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics - Kebbi State on Wednesday 29/5/2024 at Saffar Guest Inn Ltd, Birnin Kebbi.

The Director appreciated the USAID Momentum Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics project for the numerous support rendered during period and promised to sustained the input received from the project.

Earlier speaking, one of the key personnel of the project in Kebbi state Dr. Abdullahi Hussaini comprehensively presented the project achievements, challenges and lessons learned. 

According to him hundreds of Health personnel across different cadres and department were trained, digital equipment (Laptops & Tab) and other materials were also donated.

On her part, the permanent Secretary, Kebbi State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Hajiya Aishatu M. Usman was sad with the decision of USAID to terminate the project 3 years after, against 5 years initially communicated to Kebbi State Government.

She said the project helped immensely in saving many lives hence the need to continue with project till initial proposed 5 years is achieved.

Responding to Permanent Secretary's objection, one of the top official of USAID MOMENTUM Safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics from the Country office Abuja, Dr. Amalachukwu Ukaere said the decision of impromptu closeout  of the project was as results of change in top USAID official in Nigeria who came in with different ideas, not withstanding higher level discussions are ongoing and there is possibility of restoring the project or replacing it with a more promising one.

Many speakers who spoke at the event commended the project and call for it extension till initial proposed 5 years is completed.

MOMENTUM safe Surgery in Family Planning and Obstetrics seeks to accelerate reduction in maternal, newborn, and child mortality and morbidity in USAID supporting countries, Nigeria included.

Breakout sessions Presentations were made among the participants who recommended many steps to be put in place to enhance effective sustainability of  the project in the state.
