Days of Rapist Are Numbered In Kebbi State

Kebbi Governor's Wife Zainab Advocates  Creation of Special Courts to try Rape cases.

Kebbi state Governor's Wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris has advocated the creation of Special Courts to try cases of rape and other sexually gender based violence to eliminate the rising incidence of such criminality in the state.

Hajiya Zainab Nasare is worried that because of minimal prosecution of offenders, matters of rape including minors are on the increase in the society.

The wife of the governor bared her mind while receiving members of the National Human Rights Commission who visited her at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi, this Tuesday in the course of their advocacy campaign.

She spoke about the necessity of enforcing the maximum punishment on convicted offenders of life imprisonment which is already in the statutes books of the country.

Hajiya Zainab Nasare made it clear that many perpetrators continue to engage in such dastardly act because of non prosecution which gave them liberty, courage and privilege.

The wife of the governor would want strong coordination among parents, police and judiciary to curtail the trend that has assumed great dimension in both urban centres and rural areas.

Hajiya Zainab Nasare remarked that incisive action must be taken to save women and girls from unwarranted sexual assault now posing threat to their livelihood and wellbeing.

She affirmed support to the National Human Rights Commission in its advocacy campaign against rape and sexual violence among the populace.

Earlier, Kebbi State Coordinator of the Commission, Barrister Hamza Wala solicited for moral and material support from the wife of the governor in curtailing cases of rape in the state through thorough prosecution of offenders.

He informed her that the commission has documented more than one hundred cases of rape against women and girls especially in the rural areas of which few cases were now in court.

Barrister Hamza Wala complained that some parents of rape victims were not forthcoming to divulge information because they regarded such issues as taboo which if exposed, might impact negatively on their daughters in finding suitors for marriage.

The coordinator further complained that the Police has not been supportive enough in the prosecution of rape cases in the state.
