Kebbi Governor receives 4 different awards from World Bank

Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu has received four different awards from Nigeria for Women Project, a World Bank Women Intervention Project.

Receiving the awards on Monday 16th October 2023, at Government House Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State Governor, who expressed delight over the awards, promised to support any donor agency determined to bring development to the state.

He described the project as a good project that eliminated poverty in the state, assuring that it would be extended to other Local Government Areas of the state.

According to the governor, the project has promoted women and orphans, saying: "I will sustain the MOU into another stage. For now, I know it is only three Local Government Areas that are benefiting, including; Maiyama, Arugungu and Ngaski but In Sha Allah other LGAs will also be engaged."

Responding, the National Project Coordinator, Nigeria for Women Project, Mrs Ruth Peter Mshrlia appreciated the Kebbi State Governor for his effort at sustaining the project that led to successes recorded so far.

The project is a Federal Government of Nigeria project implemented through the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development with financial support from the World Bank in form of loan to states that goes to beneficiaries as grant.

She said: "This is a five year project which kick-started in 2018 and ended in 2023 but extended to March with USD 100 million financing from the International Development Association (IDA) for the 6 implementing states."

The coordinator said that the project development objectives was to improve the livelihood of women in targeted areas of Nigeria comprising; Abia, Akwa Iboom, Kebbi, Niger, Ogun and Taraba States.

"Kebbi State projects is being implemented in 3 LGAs, one from each of the 3 senatorial regions of the state, they are; Arugungu, from Kebbi North, Maiyama from Kebbi Central and Ngaski, Kebbi South, while the project targeted 54,000 beneficiaries women across the 3 participating LGAs.

Also speaking, the Hon. Commissioner for women Affairs and social development Hajiya Halima Kamba said the project has women affinity group from 15-25 aged, 18 years and above, adding that a total of 359 ward facilitators were engaged in the state. 

She further explained that the programme became very successful due to the blessing and support received from the Kebbi State Government that provides the enabling environment for the project's operations.

"The four exceptional outstanding performance awards from the World Bank are; first state to complete individual livelihood grant disbursement award, the most innovative project coordinating unit award, best collaborative partnerships award and rising star award," she confirmed.
