Takeaways from NAMA MD’s Official Engagement in China

The official engagements of the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, in the People’s Republic of China have provided strategic direction for the modernization of Nigeria’s aviation sector.

The visit offered first-hand exposure to advanced aircraft manufacturing at COMAC in Shanghai, where the delegation reviewed the C909, C919, and C939 aircraft programs, reinforcing opportunities for future technical collaboration and capacity development.

At the National Air Traffic Management Center in Nanjing, the team studied China’s centralized ATM model, including integrated surveillance, automation, and air traffic flow management systems—key templates for NAMA’s planned Centralized ATM Center in Nigeria.

The tour of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport’s AOC and TOC further demonstrated how real-time coordination, data-driven decision-making, and inter-agency synergy enhance airport efficiency and passenger experience.

Overall, the mission aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the vision of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to build a safer, smarter, and globally competitive Nigerian aviation industry. The knowledge gained is expected to accelerate NAMA’s reforms, strengthen airspace safety, and support sustainable growth of the sector.
