Convocation Milestone: AFUST Showcases Academic Progress as NAMA MD Commends Institution

The Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology (AFUST), Aliero, yesterday marked a defining moment in its history with the successful hosting of its Maiden Convocation Ceremony, a milestone that underscored the institution’s steady academic growth and rising profile in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.

Established by the Kebbi State Government and named after the renowned Islamic scholar and reformer, Sheikh Abdullahi bn Fodio—brother of the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate—the University has, since its inception, remained committed to excellence in science, technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, while also promoting strong moral values and community development.

The convocation ceremony witnessed the formal conferment of Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates on graduands from the 2015/2016 to 2022/2023 academic sessions. In addition, special prizes were presented to students who distinguished themselves through outstanding academic performance, drawing applause from parents, guardians, and invited guests.

The event was graced by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, FNSE, FCIA, MCOREN, NPOM (Danmajen Gwandu / Gamjin Kabi), who commended the University for its visible infrastructural development and consistent academic progress. He described AFUST as an emerging centre of excellence in Northern Nigeria and acknowledged the positive impact of TETFund-supported projects in strengthening teaching, research, and learning facilities. He also praised the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu, for prioritising sustainable development in the education sector.

Special commendation was extended to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Danshehu Bagudu Gwadangwaji, for his purposeful leadership and giant strides in positioning the University for academic relevance and competitiveness. The Vice-Chancellor’s efforts in ensuring that AFUST’s engineering programmes secure and retain full accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC) were particularly highlighted as a major achievement that reflects the institution’s commitment to quality and standards.

The convocation ceremony attracted an array of distinguished personalities, including the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, His Excellency Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), who served as the Special Guest of Honour; Senator Adamu Aliero; the Minister of State, Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu; as well as traditional rulers, education administrators, and other key stakeholders from across the country.

Held at the University Arena in Aliero, the colourful event featured vibrant academic regalia, cultural performances, and enthusiastic participation by families, friends, and well-wishers. The successful outing not only celebrated the achievements of the graduands but also reaffirmed AFUST’s growing reputation as a leading institution of higher learning dedicated to excellence, innovation, and national development.
