NAMA MD/CE Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar Inspects COMAC Aircraft Production Line in Shanghai

As part of his official engagement in the People’s Republic of China, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, FNSE, FCIA, MCOREN, NPOM (Danmajen Gwandu / Gamjin Kabi), visited the Corporate Headquarters of the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) in Shanghai to inspect the company’s aircraft production line.

The visit formed part of a high-level delegation led by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Yakubu Adam Kofarmata. Other members of the delegation included the Director-General of the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Captain Alex Badeh Jr.; the Registrar of the African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU); the Director of Operations, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Captain Mahmud; Captain Bunmi; and the Special Adviser to the Honourable Minister of Aviation, Isah Osagie.

COMAC, a state-owned aerospace manufacturer, is responsible for the design, development, manufacturing, and support of commercial passenger aircraft, positioning China as a growing force in the global aviation industry. During the inspection, the delegation was introduced to COMAC’s flagship aircraft programs, including the C909, C919, and the upcoming C939.

The C909 is a regional jet designed for short-haul operations, offering efficiency and reliability for domestic and regional routes. The C919 is a narrow-body, single-aisle aircraft developed for medium-haul routes and positioned as a competitor to the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families. The C939, currently under development, is envisioned as a wide-body aircraft intended for long-haul international operations.

The inspection provided the delegation with an in-depth view of COMAC’s production processes, quality assurance systems, and advanced technological capabilities, underscoring the company’s commitment to precision engineering, innovation, and strict adherence to global aviation standards. Engr. Farouk’s engagement offered valuable insights into modern aircraft manufacturing practices and emerging aviation technologies.

The visit further highlighted the importance of international collaboration, technical excellence, and integrated operational systems in shaping the future of aviation. Also the engagement are expected to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its airspace management and aviation infrastructure in line with global best practices.
