Kebbi Information Commissioner @ Yauri Emirate
Kebbi and Its Top-Notch Monarchy
By: Yakubu Ahmed BK
Even when we put the richness of our tradition and culture aside, the personality and individual accomplishments of our traditional rulers in Kebbi state is enough to guarantee us a place at the top in the country.
I visited the revered Emir of Yauri, Dr Mohammed Zayyanu Abdullahi this afternoon while on official assignment at his palace and it just dawned on me that we are indeed blessed in Kebbi state.
We run a four emirate system and despite the influence of western education, this system has continued to define us as a people united by culture and religion.
Gwandu, Argungu, Yauri and Zuru emirates constitute this system. Each of this emirates has some of its culture distinct only to it. We cannot however run away from the fact that the so many bridges that have sustained and cemented our common history are equally very strong and unassailable. Where ever you go in Kebbi, we revel in our diversity anchored on a shared religious unanimity and harmony which explains why we are have one common identity and destination.
Each of the four first class and first generation Emirate is a story on its own. No where in Nigeria will you see the distinction of having a Major General and former Military Governor in one Emirate as Emir, another one of same credentials in another, a former Vice Chancellor; and a top technocrat and a celebrated Engineer in two others. They all sit at the Royal helm, calling the shots and generally defining us as a people with rich history behind us.
When I came face to face with Dr Mohammed Zayyanu Abdullahi - the Emir of Yauri today and shared some thoughts with him, I further immersed in the impact of the speciality of our commonality.
One thing that made me to visit our traditional rulers each time such opportunities arise, is the abundance of the kind and complimentary words they all have for Governor Nasir Idris for the unprecedented achievements he has recorded under two years in office.
The Emir of Yauri likes talking about the peace that has reigned in his Kingdom since the assumption of office of Dr Nasir Idris. In the past, he reminded us that a large chunk of the Emirate was under constant attacks by bandits to the extent that farmers had to beat it. Today, he will tell you, no inch of his land is facing such problems. The fact that all farming activities have long resumed everywhere attests to the veracity of his claim. According to him, the road and educational infrastructure development which the present administration has brought to his domain is being enjoyed on account of the peace that has taken roots, noting that without peace, no development will be meaningful.
He expressed the conviction that the years ahead would witness more developments across the state going by the commitment, courage, vision and political will which the Governor has exhibited so far.
